... Some interesting observations obout The Viet Kieu Experience when visiting Vietnam from the USA.Although growing up in a multicultural environment is no piece of cake, I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to experience multicultural life first-hand.
I was born on June, 15th 1978 in the former Saigon, Vietnam. When I was one, my family, and I escaped as boat people from the communist Vietnam to Germany. So, I actually grew up in Germany, had German friends and speak German as if it was my native tongue.
I went to the Leibniz Gymnasium (a gymnasium is a kind of high school in Germany) and really had the time of my life with my German friends.
However, I left my high school in Germany in 1995 for a semester abroad. At Buena High School in Ventura, I had the opportunity to go through senior year, including the graduation, the prom and what American high school life is all about. I can only say that I enjoyed most of the time with my experience at this high school. Returning to Germany suddenly did not appear that appealing anymore.
Back in Germany, I finished up my high school years and graduated from Leibniz in June 1997. It was one of most splendid time of my life, but, on the other hand, it was also the saddest time I had. The day I feared for so long came and we all stepped into a new part of our lives." ...................................... Minh T. Nguyen: "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
